Anyone who walked through Derry’s Guildhall Square during December will have seen that Santa Claus himself had taken up residence at the entrance to the Guildhall.
Santa – AKA Derry man Martin Gallagher – was holding his 11th annual Big Santa Fundraiser Appeal for Children in Crossfire. Ably supported by his wife Mary, Martin does this collection in loving memory of his son Christopher, who died tragically of Malaria in 2006. No matter what the weather, Martin was there all day every day, taking photos with local children on his sleigh, bringing festive cheer to all – and raising lots of money for our cause. He even had the support of a little helper one day, Maya McLaughlin, who had specially asked him to be his assistant.
The 2017 collection has brought in an incredible £3,300 to date; with a little more pledged money still to come in. Everyone in Children in Crossfire is extremely grateful to Martin, Mary and the Gallagher family for their amazing support. They really do epitomise the very best of Derry compassion and kindness. Our sincere thanks for a terrific effort in 2017 – here’s to getting the suit and sleigh back out again in December 2018!
