Findings from Teachers on Educating the Heart
A new report from Children in Crossfire presents a thematic analysis of teachers’ experiences of implementing the ‘Development Education: Educating the Heart Pupil Programme’.
Children in Crossfire’s Educating the Heart Programme aims to support teachers’ Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The programme was created for primary and post-primary teachers across the island of Ireland. The purpose of the Educating the Heart programme is to support teachers to engage students in cultivating the necessary knowledge, skills, attitudes and values for participating in the world as Compassionate Global Citizens.
Children in Crossfire provide two days training for teachers participating in the programme. The purpose of the training is to develop teacher understanding of compassion and Compassionate Global Citizenship and to provide them with a range of active teaching and learning methods. From September 2017 to October 2018, 157 teachers from 87 schools participated in the training in preparation for teaching an Educating the Heart Pupil Programme of 12 lessons.
The teachers complete an accreditation portfolio to reflect on their learning and offer feedback on implementing the programme with their pupils, these portfolios have been thematically evaluated and the findings presented in the Cultivating Compassionate Global Citizenship Report
