Giving children the chance to choose

An update below from Chiku Lweno-aboud, our Strategic Partnerships & Advocacy Manager about Children in Crossfire providing essential remote learning resources to families in the communities where we operate in Tanzania during the COVID-19 pandemic

Many children reached by our special COVID-19 response did not have a book at home which is why there was a big turnout of excited parents and caregivers at special seminars, who wanted to understand how to use a workbook to conduct educational playtime at home.

Back in April, Children in Crossfire Tanzania’s Watoto Wetu Tunu Yetu campaign launched a remote-learning support response, in the context of pre-primary education streams which were closed to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Children in Crossfire teamed up with partner organisations Tahea Mwanza, Childhood Development Organisation (CDO) and Maarifa ni Ufunguo together with teachers and government officials in their respective regions of Mwanza, Morogoro and Dodoma to brainstorm and produce a special workbook that has features aligned to the national curriculum.

Several zoom meetings later, some involving over 60 participants across the three regions, the published book was ready to be distributed to parents, complete with necessary stationery such as exercise books and colouring pencils. During the dispersal sessions, not only parents showed up, but other family members such as brothers and grandmothers who would typically be at home to support children.

A total of 13,800 books were printed. The Mwanza and Morogoro regions received 4,000 each while 5,800 books were sent to the Dodoma region.
