Over the coming weeks and months, we’ll be sharing stories from 30 years of Children in Crossfire – three decades of compassion and change.

While we were founded in 1996, our story began much earlier.

On 4th May 1972, 10-year-old Richard Moore was walking home from school when his life changed forever. A rubber bullet, fired from just ten feet away, left him blind for life.
What followed is not a story of tragedy, but one of extraordinary courage, resilience and compassion.

With the love of his family and the support of his community, Richard returned to school, went on to university, built a successful career, became an accomplished musician, and created a loving family life. He leads a full and deeply purposeful life.

Remarkably, Richard never carried bitterness. Instead, he chose forgiveness.

In 2006, he met Charles – the soldier responsible. From that meeting grew a close and lasting friendship that continues to this day. As Richard often says,

“I have learned to see life in a different way.”

Inspired by the kindness he received at his most vulnerable, Richard founded Children in Crossfire in 1996 – determined to turn his experience into something positive.

What began with one child’s story has, over 30 years, grown into an organisation transforming the lives of thousands of children affected by poverty and injustice around the world.

To everyone who has supported us – whether from the beginning or more recently – thank you.

Together, we will continue to show compassion and deliver change.
